Catholic Education Weekhttp://www.stpaulswoodridge.qld.edu.au/latest-news/Pages/Spirit-of-Catholic-Education-Week-Award-Winner.aspxCatholic Education Week

This week is Catholic Education week and Catholic schools across Queensland are taking this opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos. Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

This year the theme is “Discovering new horizons”. At St Paul’s we have discovered new horizons by trying something new. Teachers have run a range of activities for students to try during morning tea, lunch breaks and before school. Some of those activities are listed below. Ask your child what did they do this week to ‘try something new’?

‘Golden child’ game

Ukulele lessons

Board games/ charades in the Library

Yoga

Paper folding

Bowling

Bollywood dancing, Irish dancing, African dancing, salsa dancing

Mandalas

Table tennis

Thank you to all teachers who supported these fun new experiences. Can your family join in the fun of learning and try something new together this week?

This week during Catholic Education Week, we also come together to celebrate Jon Sorohan and his exceptional work in our community. Jon was awarded the ‘Spirit of Catholic Education’ award this week during a ceremony in Townsville from a large number of nominations. Congratulations Jon and thank you for all that you contribute to Catholic education and to our school community. Our celebration for Jon takes place tomorrow- Thursday- at 2:00pm on the basketball court.

Jon Sorohan has worked in Catholic Education for 25+ years and he has been working in his current role as Community Hub Worker at St Paul’s for the past 7 years. He is the conduit between the community hub and the school community and he is a tireless and passionate advocate for all the students and families in our school, particularly those who are in need. He goes above and beyond to work with parents and students to provide them with love and care and often the basic needs of life. Jon builds hope in our community members and students and offers them hope to achieve more. Jon is constantly engaged in making life better for those in our community who are struggling. He is a passionate advocate for the Indigenous and New Arrival families to our school. Jon builds relationships with members of the community and treats everyone with justice. Jon carries the Josephite Charism of St Paul’s and wears “never see a need without doing something about it” on his sleeve. Jon is a man of justice and love and through his care of those in our community, he embodies what it means to be a Catholic in the 21st Century.

We warmly congratulate Jon and Michelle on this outstanding award and we look forward to seeing all families and friends of St Paul’s at our special assembly for Jon on Thursday 2nd of August at 2:05pm.

Learning Fun at St Paul'shttp://www.stpaulswoodridge.qld.edu.au/latest-news/Pages/Learning-Fun-at-St-Paul's.aspxLearning Fun at St Paul's

We are constantly looking for ways to improve student learning engagement at St Paul’s. Our teachers and School Officers work tirelessly each and every day to create quality learning experiences for our children. Our students are often going on excursions to learn about the world around them. We have also recently purchased a range of flexible learning furniture for our upper classroom teachers to help them learn and collaborate in their learning. I have included some photos of this amazing furniture. We have also installed some outside learning spaces off the Year 1 and 2 rooms to help teachers and school officers work in a collaborative and positive learning space.

Growing Strong in the Faith

We wear our Catholic Faith on our sleeve at St Paul’s and you can feel the Catholicity of our community through the positive conversations and experiences that take place at school and also through the support processes we have in place at school. The story of Jesus is at the heart of all we think say and do at St Paul’s. To confirm our outward expression of our Catholic identity we have installed a beautiful wooden cross on the outside of C block. This cross is made from 100 year old timber and is a beautiful reminder of the heart of our school: the story of Jesus.
